The hard truth is that drinking straight, untreated tap water is no longer an option, even in the developed world. When environmental degradation was at its peak in the USA, the Clean Water Act of 1972 and the Safe Drinking Water Act of 1974 were passed, aiming to protect us from exposure to water-borne contaminants — which now number in the hundreds. Sadly, one in four Americans drinks from public water systems that violate the Safe Drinking Water Act. These violations can be anything from lead (a neurological toxin), leached from water distribution pipes to fecal bacteria contamination. To make things even worse, approximately half of the 190+ pollutants identified in our nation’s water supplies are not regulated. The primary reason for this situation is that communities, large and small, do not have the financial resources to implement technology capable of reducing these contaminants to safe levels.
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has found widespread violations of federal drinking water standards, with contaminants varying by region. Pesticides, chemicals from petroleum and plastics, pharmaceutical drugs (EDC’s), personal care products (PPCP’s), heavy metals, disinfection byproducts DBP’s, chloramines, fluoride, and numerous others are known to exist in American water supplies. For example, tap water in Beverly Hills contains nine contaminants present in levels above health guidelines. These include arsenic, radiological contaminants, and trichloroacetic acid, and are all linked to cancer.
On the other side of the USA, the New York City public water supply, which serves almost nine million people, contains six substances that breach selected health guidelines and eight others. All six were, once again, carcinogens, including hexavalent chromium, and chloroform. If you think hexavalent chromium sounds familiar, you’re right – it is the “Erin Brockovich” chemical, infamous for causing cancer in children. Overall, the EWG found more than 250 chemicals in American drinking water, with 81 percent of water systems containing carcinogens and 77 percent containing hexavalent chromium.
A study by EWG scientists, published recently in the journal Environmental Health, estimates that the pollutants in California tap water could cause approximately 221 cancer cases every year. Interestingly, 85 percent of these cases come from toxins present in levels below their legal limits. Medical experts point out that these are typically assessed by officials one by one for carcinogenic and other harmful effects, instead of together in combinations found in the real world.
Besides cancer, the contaminants in drinking water can also contribute to neurological problems, such as debilitating Alzheimer’s disease. The EWG found that 71 million Americans are exposed to unhealthy and often illegal levels of arsenic, which negatively affects verbal skills, cognitive functions, such as planning and problem-solving, and mood regulation. Mercury exposure was shown to affect 2.7 million, which is a potent neurotoxin. Sometimes, regulations are non-existent, others are poorly or intermittently enforced.

What About Bottled Water?
While it may look attractive as an immediate solution, bottled water has its own problems. When researchers tested 250 bottles of water from nine countries, including Kenya, Thailand, and the USA, plastic microparticles were found in 93 percent of the samples! Chemicals in plastic, such as phthalates and BPA, have been linked to serious health issues, including autism, ADHD, infertility, and some cancers. The cost of bottled water is also expensive in the long-term and contributes to one of the worst pollution crises.
